Infant Mortality rates
Here is the link to the CIA World Factbook, which lists the infant mortality rates of countries. #1 is the worst, so the US is 42 from the bottom (best). Cuba comes in before we do. 42nd. Really. One might think we would come in a little better, yes?

It is interesting to note that 90% of the countries that come in ahead of us, have the midwifery system of care. Midwives attend the normal, healthy, low-risk births (majority) and doctors are free to care for the higher risk mothers and deal with pathology, surgery, etc. Mothers of both groups get very personalized care and are better served because of this system.
Whether you choose to birth in a hospital, birth center, or at home, consider a Midwife. I know that in most states (AZ included), there are hospitals that give some Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) attending rights.
